This evening was a happy one,
Or at least indifferent. Spent with friends,
Discussing music, and books, and laughing
Over weather, and politics.
I spent most of it, wondering
What happens when I reach home, about
The lady who opens the door,
And asks me why I am late.
Why is dinner getting cold? And
How come I forgot my umbrella?
I wonder sometimes, if that will
Be worth it: sharing my life,
With another person. Giving someone
The right to ask ‘why?’
Allowing them to worry, about stuff
I laugh off, with a ‘It will be all
Right.’ Is it rightful, and honest
Or merely selfish?
I worry about what other people
Call nothing. The difference between being
Calm and being becalmed. The separation
Between a comma and an apostrophe. Raymond
Carver and Raymond Chandler. I worry
About a few ounces of ink on pieces of paper.
The difference between overeating
And being full? The semantic difference
Of excess and binge?
How will anyone understand
That? That it is very real?
A matter of life, and living?

@CrimsonShadows
ReplyDeleteThank you. I do bother about such stuff. Often a lot. My scariest nightmare is that I will marry someone who does not appreciate books, and will have kids who disdain them. The thought is terrifying.
I know, I feel thy pain.
ReplyDeleteI'm terrified by the thought of marrying someone who has never experienced the magic of words.

ReplyDeleteThe other scary aspect is, what if the bookshelves begin to occupy a bigger part of your life than the significant other. #SpaceConstrains, as we would say on Twitter, or The Golden Mean, as my OB prof used to say. Where does it exist, and what does one give up for it?
Yes, that too! How much space is too much or too little? And who decides?
ReplyDeleteNo easy answers to either question. But I'd rather subsist on the thought that between the partner and I, we cannot amicably divide the bookshelf.
Try it sometime!
A real lovely post :) and something which put me to thought too !
